SOME MISCELLANEOUS REFERENCES (1)

Numerous Corin descendants cannot immediately be 'fitted in' to the family tree. The Carne Corins are one example. Another is the Philip Corin who was born around 1805 and married Catherine Oates - was he the son of the Philip baptized in 1780 or the Philip baptized in 1786. It seems safest to collect miscellaneous Corins into separate sections until they can be shown to descend from some particular ancestor in the main history. This section originally included the John Corin who died in March (?May) 1859 at Trungle Farm, Paul, whom Leonie Chirgwin's researches have identified with the son of John Corin and Grace Rodda baptized on 30 November 1806 at Penzance.

This section is thus a scratch-pad for miscellaneous Corins. These include:
John Corin (1754?-1824) of Mary Tavy and Tavistock.
Daniel Corin (1791-1863), who married Mary Littlejohns.
John Corin, who married Thomasin Hockin at Camborne in 1809.
William Corin, who married Jane Trenerry at Camborne in 1806.
William Corin, who married Ellen Wakem in Redruth.

JOHN CORIN (1754?-1824) lived in Mary Tavy and Tavistock. His wife, Mary, was some three years younger than he. He was living in West Street, Tavistock, at the time of his death. He was buried on 23 May 1824. His widow survived him by ten years, being buried at Tavistock on 24 November 1834, aged 77.

The couple had at least five children:

1 PHILIP CORIN (1793-?), baptized at Mary Tavy, the parish adjacent to Tavistock, on 31 March 1793. He does not seem to have survived.

2 JOHN CORIN (1794-1837), baptized on 8 April 1794 at Tavistock. He died at West Street, Tavistock, in 1827, aged 32, and was buried on 2 October.

3 PHILIP CORIN (1797-?) was baptized at Tavistock on 28 October 1797.

4 WILLIAM CORIN (1800-1855) was born in 1800, but not baptized until 12 December 1801, at Tavistock. He was a miner. He married Grace Piper, born at Beaford, Devon, on 30 April 1824, at Tavistock. The couple were living at Mary Tavy, adjacent to Tavistock in 1827. In 1838, they were living at Foundry Buildings, Tavistock. William died in 1859 and was buried on 9 December. His widow survived him and was living in 1861 in Exeter St next to her son William.

4.1 DANIEL CORIN (1825-?) was baptized on 24 August 1825 at Tavistock. On 11 February 1849 he married Jane Croker, a farmer's daughter a couple of years older than himself. Daniel worked as a labourer. In 1861 he and Jane were living at 38 Navy Row, Morice Town, Devonport, together with his brother Thomas and his family. By 1871 the couple were at 12 Ross St., Morice Town, Devonport, where Daniel was employed in H.M. Dockyard. In 1881, Daniel was still employed at the dockyard, but the couple had moved to 6 Garden St., where they had a lodger, Florence K. Bickford, aged 6. Garden St and Ross St are two turnings off Albert Road, Devonport.

4.2 JOHN CORIN (1827-?), baptized at Mary Tavy on 2 September 1827.

4.3 MARY ANN CORIN (1828-1841), baptized at Tavistock on 21 October 1828, and buried, aged 13, on 12 April 1841.

4.4 WILLIAM CORIN (1831-1835), buried at Tavistock on 2 July 1835, aged 4.

4.5 THOMAS CORIN (1834-19??), born during November 1834, but baptized at Tavistock on 21 October 1835. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 2 February 1856. At the time he was described as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, with blue eyes, light brown hair and fair complexion. On 8 May 1860, he married Ann Gregory at St Andrew's, Plymouth. He served twenty years in the Navy, but also kept a public house. The couple had four children recorded in the 1881 Census Returns:

4.5.1 HARRY CORIN (1861-?), unmarried and an apprentice in 1881, born at Morice Town.

4.5.2 CHARLES CORIN (1864-?), also an apprentice in 1881.

4.5.3 EDITH CORIN (1866-?), born at Morice Town like her elder brothers.

4.5.4 THOMAS CORIN (1873-?), born at Plymouth.

4.6 WILLIAM CORIN (1838-?), born at Tavistock on 29 June 1838. In 1861 he was a moulder. On 12 June 1859 he married Mary Jane Mitchell, a miner's daughter from Tavistock. He was working as a moulder, and living in Exeter St., Tavistock in 1861. However, within six weeks of census day, his life changed. Like his brother Thomas, he served twenty years in the Navy, enlisting on 25 May 1861 as a stoker. He was 2½ inches taller than his brother, but with the same blue eyes and fair complexion. For a time he was on the HMS Indus together with Thomas. There used to be a custom in the Royal Navy whereby an elder son could 'claim' his brother to work on the same ship, and hopefully keep him out of trouble.

At some time following the birth of Annie in 1880 (she, as her elder siblings before her , was born in Devonport), the family moved North and settled in Willington Quay (Wallsend). It is believed in the family that William intended specifically to work at the North Eastern Marine shipyard in Wallsend. William did indeed work there along with son Thomas and possibly other sons.

William and Mary Jane appear to have had nine children:

4.6.1 WILLIAM HENRY CORIN (1860-1918) was born in 1859 or 1860. On 3 May 1882 he married Kate Binmore at Stoke Damerel. In the marriage register, he is described as a coach painter, and his father as a Royal Naval pensioner. They emigrated to South Africa around the turn of the century - it is said to escape debts later paid by his brother Thomas. They lived at several addresses, though principally Tamar House, Argyle Street, Woodstock, near Cape Town - a typical colonial house with a corrugated iron roof and a verandah. William died in Cape Town on 22 October 1918. His widow married again, to a tailor called Wakeman, and lived on until at least the eve of the Second World War. They had a number of children, the three eldest being:

4.6.1.1 ANNIE CORIN.

4.6.1.2 WILL CORIN.

4.6.1.3 EMILY CORIN.

And their grandchildren included:

4.6.1.3.1 GEORGE (?) T. CORIN, who used to paint scenes, flowers, etc., which were sent to relatives as Christmas cards.

4.6.1.3.2 PHYLLIS BERGMAN, living at 130 Prospect Road, Walmer, Port Elizabeth 6070 in 1989 (see Corin Newsletter No. 5)

4.6.2 EMILY CORIN (1862-1962). She left home at the age of 14 to help look after the children of a wealthy mine owner (believed to be in London). In later years she returned to the family in Wallsend and lived with her sister Bessie. She died a few weeks short of her hundredth birthday in 1962.

4.6.3 BESSIE CORIN (1865-19??). She never married, and is listed in the 1901 census as a "domestic servant".

4.6.4 MARY CORIN (1869-19??), known as POLLY. She married William Ainslie in the second quarter of 1900, and had three sons:

4.6.4.1 ARCHIBALD WILLIAM AINSLIE (1901-??)

4.6.4.2 THOMAS AINSLIE

4.6.4.3 ROBERT AINSLIE

4.6.5 CHARLES FREDERICK CORIN (1871-19??), listed in the 1901 census as an "engine fitter". He married Margaret Waters (born in Hartlepool) in the second quarter of 1896, and had four daughters:

4.6.5.1 EMILY CORIN (1897-??), born in the third quarter of 1897.

4.6.5.2 MARGARET CORIN (1899-??), born in the second quarter of 1899.

4.6.5.5 JENNIE CORIN (1903-??), born at the end of 1903.

4.6.5.6 MINNIE CORIN (1912-2006). In 2005 she was at Willington Quay, Wallsend. She died on 15 April 2006.

A further child died in childbirth.

4.6.6 THOMAS CORIN (1876-1962) was William and Mary Jane's third son. He is listed in the 1901 census as a boiler maker which remained his trade all of his working life. He spent some years living with sisters Emily and Bessie before marrying Elizabeth McWhirter (b. 1886 in Jarrow, listed in the 1901 census as a domestic servant) at the age of 40. Elizabeth had one child from a previous marriage - Isabella Kyles.

Thomas & Elizabeth had two children:

4.6.6.1 ELIZABETH ANNIE CORIN (1918-2012). She married John Fairbairn (1899-1959) in 1947. She died on 1 December 2012. They had two children:

He married Kristin Marie Mikealsen from Trondheim (Norway) in 1952. They were married in New York. In 2005, they were living in Wyoming. Thomas died on 14 January 2006. They had two children (both married):

4.6.6.2.1 NINA ELIZABETH CORIN (b.1956).

4.6.6.2.2 ANNE BRONWEN CORIN (b.1959), also known as Bonnie. She married Robert Cyril Aquin Jr in 1986 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They moved to Bellflower, California, but returned to Wyoming in 1991. They have 2 daughters:

4.6.2.2.1 SARA MARIE AQUIN (b.1967), born in November 1987 in Bellflower, California.

4.6.2.2.2 LESLIE ANNE AQUIN (b. 1989), was born in January 1989, also in Bellflower.

Barry Corin (son of Edward Corin 4.6.9) had three daughters (as of ~1960) I believe that one of them was named Lynn but I would have to try and get my hands on some of Tom's photo albumns to be sure.

4.6.7 JOHN CORIN (1878-19??), listed in the 1901 census as a blacksmith. Nothing further is known about him.

4.6.8 ANNIE CORIN (1880-19??), known as Nan. She is listed in the 1901 census as a dressmaker. She married Thomas Shephard. They had two sons:

4.6.9 EDWARD CORIN (1885-19??), listed in the 1901 census as an apprentice coppersmith. He married Ann, a native of Wallsend, and later emigrated to New Zealand. He had a son:

4.6.9.1 BARRY CORIN, who later visited the family in Wallsend then went on to the U.S. to visit Tom (4.6.6.2) and his family. He had three daughters. He is believed to have gone on to work in the coffee trade in Brazil.

DANIEL CORIN (1791-1863) married Mary Littlejohns on 12 August 1811 in Tavistock. He was possibly a son of John and Mary, mentioned above. He became a ropemaker. In 1813, he was at Lower Back Street, Tavistock. By 1816 he had moved to Bennawell Street, and by 1818 to Love Lane. In 1824 he was at Lower Brook Street, and in 1826 in West Street, moving by 1828 back to Brook Street. In 1830, he was one of the four Parish Constables of Tavistock, and had a stall in the market. We know that his health at this time was not very good - he was weak and lame from rheumatism. He is probably the furniture broker and dealer in marine stores who was in the debtors' prison in Exeter, according to the London Gazette of 11 October 1833. He moved to Pepper St., Tavistock between 1832 and 1836, and was there at least until 1851, although he and his wife were not at home on Census Night 1841. Mary died on 3 June 1857, and Daniel on 4 May 1863. Their children included

He sailed twice around Cape Horn. He became a journeyman painter and glazier like his father. On 9 January 1861 he married Sarah J Smith at Hamilton, Ohio. It is very likely that Sarah died, for it is said that between 1869 and 1871 he married Sarah Moran in Canada. Sallie was from Virginia, where she and her parents had helped to smuggle hundreds of slaves to freedom in Canada on the 'Underground Railroad'. Sallie was the daughter of Irish parents, and had been born in New Hampshire in 1849 or 1850. The couple moved to Youngstown, Ohio. Volney worked in churches and government buildings, and also painted the scenic backdrops for vaudeville and stage productions. He had naturally curly hair, and would rub his brush through it for static electricity. His speciality was gilding, and in his gilt work he would use his mouth to get a fine point on his brush. This proved his downfall, and he died from throat cancer at the age of fifty. Volney and Sallie had four children:

1.5.1 LIZZIE CORIN (1871?-?), born in Canada and aged 8 in 1880.

1.5.2 VOLNEY WASHINGTON CORIN (1873?-1889), born in Ohio and aged 6 in 1880. In 1889 he fell while running down a hill, broke his neck and died.

(It is interesting that another Volney Washington Corin was living in Cincinnati in 1898. He joined the First Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in the Spanish-American War of 1898. He died on 21 January 1927 and is buried in Dayton National Cemetery in Ohio. He left a widow, Mary E Corin.)
