The couple perhaps stayed in Foulness until at least 1822, when their son, Edward, died, but they were not living in the parish in later life. George, their son, though, seems to have been living in Foulness until between 1836 and 1840. Mention should also be made of the figure of James Knight, born in 1770. He was Reader of Long Acre Episcopal Chapel in 1831, and on 11 December of that year, he first officiated at services in Foulness. He was appointed Rector of Foulness early the next year, and served there until his death on 11 November 1844.
John and Mary Knight had perhaps eleven children:
1 CATHARINE KNIGHT (177?-18??). There is no evidence that she was John and Mary's daughter, but it seems likely that she was related. In 1796 she married Isaac Pratt, also of Foulness. The witnesses to the marriage were Robert Wyborn and William Gardner, perhaps related to the Charles Gardner who witnessed Philip Knight's marriage in Kennington some 33 years later.
2 JOHN KNIGHT (1789-?), baptized at Foulness on 13 February 1789.
3 EDWARD KNIGHT (1790-1799), baptized at Foulness on 25 July 1790. He died, aged eight, and was buried on 17 March 1799.
4 MARY KNIGHT (1792-?), baptized at Foulness on 2 December 1792.
5 JAMES KNIGHT (1794-18??), baptized at Foulness on 2 June 1794. He was perhaps a farm labourer working at Little Wakering in 1841, but this is not certain. If it was he, he was with his wife, Mary, sons James (20) and George (1) and daughters Eliza (15), Sarah (10) and Emma (5). There were no Knights from Foulness in the Rochford Hundred of Essex in 1851 but a James Knight of the right age was there. Another James Knight, aged 58, from "Essex", was a married bricklayer at 86 Union Street, Lambeth, living with his wife Jane (38) and children George (11), John (9), Joseph (2) and Mary Ann (1 month).
6 GEORGE KNIGHT (1795-1796), baptized at Foulness on 22 September 1795. He died in infancy and was buried on 21 February 1796.
7 ELIZABETH KNIGHT (1797-?), baptized at Foulness on 16 May 1797.
8 SARAH KNIGHT (1799-?), baptized at Foulness on 13 January 1799.
9 EDWARD KNIGHT (1803-1822), baptized at Foulness on 30 January 1803. He was still in Foulness in 1822, when he died, aged 19. He was buried at Foulness on 17 November 1822.
10 GEORGE KNIGHT (1804-1895), baptized at Foulness on 12 September 1804. He married before 1833. His wife, Mary, had been born in Worth, Surrey. His daughters were born in Foulness, so it seems that George remained on ths island until some date between 1836 and 1840. He seems to have moved around then to Wandsworth. In 1841 he was a labourer and living at James Street, Clapham. In 1851 he was working as a carman, and living at 22 Ann Street, Plumstead, with Mary, his daughters Caroline and Emma and his son, George. His age was given as 48.
In 1861, his age was given as 59. He and Mary were living at 24 Hudson Road, Plumstead. (They appear at the same address in 1871.) By now, George was a labourer at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. His son George and his family lived in the same house. By 1881, Mary had died, and George was living ("aged 79") at 25 Orchard Road, Plumstead. The family were still living with him. This was also the case in 1891. He died in the first quarter of 1895, aged 92.
10.1 CAROLINE KNIGHT (1833?-??), born in Foulness, and aged 17 in 1851.
10.2 EMMA KNIGHT (1836?-??), born in Foulness, and aged 14 in 1851.
10.3 GEORGE FRANCIS KNIGHT (1841?-19??), born in Lambeth, Surrey (or more probably in the third quarter of 1841 in Wandsworth), and aged 29 in 1871. His wife's name was Eliza. She was four years younger than George, and from Battle in Sussex. She was probably Eliza Eldridge, and they probably married in the last quarter of 1864 in the Greenwich registration district. George, like his father, worked at the Royal Arsenal. In 1901 he was a machinist. His wife was still alive in 1901.
10.3.1 MARY A KNIGHT (1866-??), born in Plumstead in the first quarter of 1866, aged 5 in 1871 and 15 in 1881.
10.3.2 JAMES KNIGHT (1867-19??), born in Plumstead, probably as James Stephen Knight in the second quarter of 1867, aged 3 in 1871 and 13 in 1881. His second name was also probably John. In 1891 and 1901 he was a metal turner. His wife's name was Elizabeth, from Plaistow, Essex. They probably married at West Ham in the second quarter of 1898. They had issue:
10.3.2.1 ALBERT FRANCIS KNIGHT (1899-19??), born in Charlton, Kent, in the first quarter of 1899.
10.3.3 GEORGE FRANCIS KNIGHT (1870-??), aged 4 months in 1871. He was a general labourer in 1891.
10.3.4 ALFRED PHILIP KNIGHT (1876-19??), aged 4 in 1881, born in the second quarter of 1876. In 1891 he was making cartridges at the Arsenal. In 1901 he was a waiter, still in Plumstead.
10.3.5 WILLIAM KNIGHT (1879-19??), aged 2 in 1881. He was probably born William James in the first quarter of 1879. In 1901 he was still living at home in Plumstead.
10.3.6 DAVID KNIGHT (1881-19??), probably born David Allen Knight in the fourth quarter of 1881, aged 9 in 1891.
10.3.7 CHARLOTTE KNIGHT (1883-19??), born in the fourth quarter of 1883, and aged 7 in 1891. In 1901 she was a domestic servant in Charlton in the house of the McCanlis family, former neighbours from Plumstead.
10.3.8 FLORENCE LOUISE KNIGHT (1886-19??), born in the second quarter of 1886, aged 5 in 1891 and 14 in 1901.
11 PHILIP KNIGHT (1806-1879), baptized at Foulness on 13 May 1806, of whom more anon.
