JEREMIAH BOWLER (1810?-18??). His wife's name was Mary.


RICHARD BOWLER (1810-1888), baptized at Elstow on 18 November 1810. He was an agricultural labourer. He married Sarah Whittamore at Elstow on 16 October 1831. She was a lacemaker. Richard died in the second quarter of 1888. Sarah died at the end of 1900, aged 82. Their children were:

1. MARY BOWLER (1832-??), baptized at Elstow on 2 September 1832 and aged 18 in 1851 when she was lacemaker like her mother. She married Joseph Babington Stapleton at Elstow on 6 February 1853.

2. CHARLES BOWLER (1835-1918), aged 16 in 1851, and an agricultural labourer. See below.

3. JAMES BOWLER (1837?-??), aged 14 in 1851, and an agricultural labourer.

4. JOHN BOWLER (1838-??), born at the end of 1838 and aged 12 in 1851, and an agricultural labourer. In 1871 he was widowed and living with his children. A year later he remarried at Elstow, to Mary Ann Webb from Gamlingay. John and his wife wife had two children:

4.1 WALTER BOWLER (1862-??), aged 9 in 1871. In 1901 he was a railway labourer, still living at home.

4.2 ADA BOWLER (1864-??), presumably the ADA ELIZABETH BOWLER registered in the third quarter of 1864, aged 7 in 1871.

With Mary Ann, he had five further children:

4.3 THOMAS BOWLER (1880-??), aged 20 in 1901, when he was a baker.

4.4 FLORENCE BOWLER (1884-??), aged 17 in 1901.

4.5 ERNEST WEBB BOWLER (1886-??), aged 14 in 1901.

4.6 REGINALD WEBB BOWLER (1889-??), aged 11 in 1901.

4.7 EVA VICTORIA W BOWLER (1892-??), aged 8 in 1901.

5. MARIA BOWLER (1840-??)(sic), aged 11 in 1851 when she was lacemaker like her sister and mother.

6. THOMAS BOWLER (1843-??), aged 8 in 1851.

7. RICHARD BOWLER (1844-??), aged 6 in 1851.

8. SARAH BOWLER (1846-??), aged 4 in 1851.

9. EMMA BOWLER (1848-??), aged 2 in 1851.

10. PHOEBE BOWLER (1853-??), aged 18 in 1871, when she had an illegitimate son living with her:

10.1 GEORGE BOWLER (1871-??), one month old in 1871. He may be the ARTHUR GEORGE BOWLER registered in the first quarter, or the GEORGE LEACH BOWLER registered in the second quarter.

11. ELLEN BOWLER (1857?-??), aged 14 in 1871.


CHARLES BOWLER (1835-1918), was born in Elstow and baptized there on 1 March 1835. He was an agricultural labourer. He married Sarah Mayhew at Elstow on 15 February 1856.

Sarah was also from Elstow, two years younger than Charles, and was a lacemaker. her father was John Mayhew.

At the time of the 1901 census, he and Sarah were visiting their son Arthur and his wife Minnie at the ophanage in Willesden where they worked. Charles described himself as a market gardener. In 1911, Sarah was at The Elms, Elstow, with her 14-year-old grandson Arthur.

Charles died on 11 May 1918. The Bedfordshire Times and Independent of 31 May 1918 records that he had been greatly respected in the village, and had been connected with the Bunyan Church, Elstow, as a member for over 50 years. He was also a Sunday school teacher previous to his resignation in 1903, for 37 years, and received from the National Sunday School Union a diploma of honour for his long and faithful services. As caretaker of the Moot Hall for 46 years he also rendered loving and devoted service. A very special event was the diamond wedding of himself and wife in the Bunyan Memorial Hall, on Feb. 15th, 1916, when a large gathering of children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends gathered to honour the occasion.
The first part of the funeral service, on May 16th, took place in the Bunyan Memorial Hall, and was conducted by Mr. R.H. Poynter in the presence of many relatives and friends, and a large gathering also assembled for the commital service in the Churchyard. The chief mourners were Mrs. Charles Bowler (widow), Mr. J. Bowler, Mr. Arthur Bowler, Mr. Christopher Bowler, Mrs. Charles Cirket, and Mrs. Seville (children), and the other relatives included Mrs. Jakes, Mr. and Mrs. Leach, Mt. Charles Cirket, Mr. and Mrs. P. Masters, Mrs. A. Berwick, Miss B. Masters, Mrs. Chriostopher Bowler, Miss Maud Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. W. Mayhew, Mrs. W. Bowler, and Mrs. A.J. Chillery. A number of beautiful wreaths were sent by relatives and friends. A memorial service was held on the followiong Sunday evening in the Bunyan Memorial Hall. conducted by Mr. R.H. Poynter.

Sarah died on Sunday 14 July 1929, aged 93, "the oldest parishioner".

Charles and Sarah had issue:

1. JOHN BOWLER (1856-??), aged 4 in 1861 and 15 in 1871, when he was an agricultural labourer.

2. ELIZABETH BOWLER (1859-??), aged 11 in 1871, when she was a lacemaker.

3. ARTHUR EDWARD BOWLER (1861-19??) was born in Elstow at the end of 1861. In 1881 he was an unemployed manservant living at home. He married Minnie Golding from Colchester at the end of 1888 in the Greenwich registration district. In 1901 he was employed as a carver at the orphanage in Percy Road, Kilburn, in Willesden. Minnie was caretaker. The orphanage housed 19 boys and 56 girls aged between 2 amd 17, and had a staff of twelve, of whom Arthur was the only male. In 1911 Arthur was at 11 Percy Road, Kilburn, working on his own account as a builder and decorator. The couple had three children, all at the orphanage in 1901:

3.1 ARTHUR CHARLES BOWLER (1890-19??), born in New Cross, aged 11 in 1901. In 1911 he was an unemployed general labourer.

3.2 MINNIE THEODORA MARY BOWLER (1891-19??), born in Deptford on 2 or 3 April 1891. She was 18 days old when the 1891 census was taken, when she and her mother were staying with Aaron and Eliza Warren at 26 Octavius Street, Deptford. She was aged 10 in 1901. In 1911 she was a shorthand typist. She married Albert H Adkins in Paddington in the summer of 1913. He was a toolmaker. In 1939 they were at 30 Churchill Avenue, Uxbridge.

3.3 JOHN WILLIAM BOWLER (1893-19??), born in Colchester on 20 July 1893, aged 7 in 1901. In 1911 he was a domestic chauffeur. He married, probably in 1915. In 1939 he was a patient at Northumberland House, Green Lanes, Stoke Newington.

4. MARTHA BOWLER (1867-??), aged 4 in 1871. She was a school teacher in 1891 and 1901.

5. JANE BOWLER (1869-1937), born at Elstow on 7 January 1869. In 1891, she and her sisters Ada and Sarah were in service in Kensington. She married Charles Cirket on 14 August 1894 in the Bedford registration district. She and Charles moved to Mansfield shortly afterwards (or before?). Jane died on 7 April 1937.

6. ADA BOWLER (18??-??), in service in Kensington in 1891.

7. SARAH ANN BOWLER (1871-1905), born at Elstow at the end of 1871. She was in service in Kensington in 1891. She married Peter Masters in 1899. She is mentioned in the family bible as dying on 26 December 1905 at the age of 33.

8. CHRISTOPHER ERNEST BOWLER (1876-19??) was born in Elstow in the summer of 1876. He was an agricultural labourer in 1891.

9. BERTHA MAUD BOWLER (1883-1975) was born on 23 November 1883. She was living with her sister, Jane Cirket, in 1901. At the end of 1906 she married Frank Edward Seville in Mansfield.

Frank had been born on 23 February 1882. He worked for the Mansfield Electricity Company.

In 1911 they were at Fairfield Terrace, Dallas Street, Mansfield. Frank was an assistant in a grocer's shop. The Sevilles lived at 22 Beech Hill Drive in Mansfield, and were good family friends of the Cirkets. Frank died in the summer of 1959, and Bertha died in the spring of 1975.

9.1 ALBERT EDWARD SEVILE (1907-) was born on 15 December 1907. He married Edith A Taylor in the spring of 1933 in Mansfield.

Edith had been born on 27 January 1907.

In 1939 Albert was manager of a retail stationery shop in Hull, living at 37 Summergangs Road.

9.1.1 MARILYN A SEVILLE (1936-19??) was born in Sculcoates. She married James D Rankin in the second quarter of 1960 in the Buckrose registration district. Jim and Marilyn's children were:

9.1.1.1 JAMES E RANKIN (1960-), born in East Yorkshire.

9.1.1.2 JOANNE M RANKIN (1961-), born in East Yorkshire.

9.1.1.3 JONATHAN M RANKIN (1965-), born in Blackpool.

9.1.1.4 RICHARD CHARLES RANKIN (1966-), born in Fylde.

9.2 FRANK CHARLES M SEVILLE (1916-2007), known as Jim, was born on 14 June 1916. In 1939 he was an assistant wireman at the Mansfield Corporation Electricity works. He married Ethel Irene Heath at Mansfield in the second quarter of 1942.

Ethel, known as Renie, had been born on 13 June 1913. In 1939 she was a draper's shop assistant, but was a patient in Branston Hall sanatorium in Lincolnshire, presumably being treated for tuberculosis.

Ethel died at Mansfield in the summer of 1991. Jim died at Mansfield at the end of 2007.
