Kate Eliza Burch and her ancestry

JAMES BURCH (1746-18??) was possibly the son of John Burch, who had been baptized at Brabourne on 26 July 1709, and Elizabeth Woodland. He was born in London on 25 July 1746. He married Sarah Drury. Sarah died, aged 87, on 31 January 1848. They had issue:

3 WILLIAM BURCH (1787-1872), born at High Halden on 22 September 1787. His wife was Jane. She died on 8 January 1845. In 1851 William was at Bachelor Farm, High Halden, farming 60 acres and employing two men and a boy. He died on 13 January 1872, aged 84. His issue included:

3.2 JANE BURCH (1820?-18??), born in High Halden. She died before 1872.

3.3 SARAH BURCH (1825-??), born in High Halden. She married Thomas Pearson. She died on 23 January 1853. A son, Alfred, died on 25 September 1845, aged three months, and two other sons, Walter and Alfred (sic) survived.

3.4 ANN BURCH (18??-??), born in High Halden, alive in 1872.

3.5 EMILY BURCH (1830?-??), born in High Halden. She died on 26 January 1862, aged 31.

3.6 WILLIAM BURCH (1836?-??), born in High Halden.

Two children died in infancy: William, aged 3 weeks, and Rachel, aged 7 weeks.

4 ANN BURCH (178?-17??), born at High Halden, who died in infancy.

5 CHARLOTTE BURCH (1792-??), born at High Halden on 15 December 1792.

6 ANN BURCH (1795-1875), born at High Halden on 27 June 1795.

7 JEREMIAH BURCH (1798-1877), born at High Halden on 28 December 1798. He married Elizabeth Blackman (1804-1847) on 31 March 1827 at Bethersden. In 1841, the family were at Old Barnland House, High Halden, together with Sarah, Jeremiah's mother, and five children, Elizabeth (13), Charlotte (11), Ann (9), Sarah (7) and John (1).

8 ELIZABETH BURCH (1802-??), born at High Halden on 27 March 1802. She is said to have gone to America and married a Mr Peckham.


THOMAS BURCH (1785-1858) was living in Wye, Kent in 1818 with his wife Mary. He was the son of James Burch of High Halden and his wife Sarah, née Drury, born at High Halden on 18 May 1785. (A Thomas Burch married Mary Shipwash at Westwell by licence on 13 September 1816 - both were "of this parish".) Thomas and Mary were members of the Bethel Calvinistic Baptist Church which had been founded at Brabourne in 1818. He and Mary were living in Bridge Street, Wye, at the time of the 1841 Census. By 1851, however, Thomas was widowed, and still at Bridge Street, a farmer of 25 acres. He was buried on 27 July 1858, aged 73.

Thomas and Mary had nine children, seven of whose births were all registered at the chapel on 17 February 1837:

1 THOMAS BURCH (1817-18??), born at Wye on 8 March 1817. In 1871, he was a railway porter, at 45 Millicent Street, Cardiff, lodging in the house of Jane John, a launderess. He described himself as married, and Jane was a widow. They married at Cardiff in the second quarter of 1876. Jane was 17 years younger than him.

In 1881 the couple were at 8 Harold Street, Roath, Glamorgan. Thomas described himself as an agent. (They may have married in Cardiff in the second quarter of 1876.)

2 WILLIAM BURCH (1818-1896?), born on 19 February 1818 (see below).

3 CHARLES JOHN BURCH (1821-18??), born at Wye on 5 March 1821. He married Ann (Fanny) Bygrave, from Shefford in Bedfordshire, at Biggleswade in the second quarter of 1849. In 1851 he was a schoolmaster at Elm Cottage, Hampstead, with his wife, Fanny, and baby son, Charles. Ten years later, he was a victualler at St George's Place, Canterbury. In 1871 he was living in Rawcliffe, near Goole in Yorkshire, and was commercial traveller for a brewery. In 1881 he was a commercial traveller, at 69 Grosvenor St., Broughton in Salford, Lancashire. He was widowed, and living with his daughter, Flora. In 1891, he was at 285 Gladstone Street, Peterborough with his son Henry.

3.1 CHARLES JACKSON BURCH (1850-??), born in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, and aged five months at the date of the 1851 census. In 1871, he was an ironmonger. living with his parents in Rawcliffe. He married Mary Elizabeth Chandler, from Ash, Kent, in Canterbury in the last quarter of 1876. In 1881 they were living at 9 Old Dover Road, Canterbury. In 1901 he was at Belper, Derbyshire. Charles and Mary Burch had a daughter:

3.3 HENRY J BURCH (1857-??), born in Wye in the last quarter of 1857. In 1871 he was a brewer's apprentice, and in 1891 he was a book traveller.

3.4 CLARA F BURCH (1861-1863), born in Canterbury and aged 3 months on census day. She died at the end of 1863.

4 CAROLINE BURCH (1822-18??), born on 28 August 1822

5 ANN BURCH (1824-18??), born on 14 August 1824. She was living at home in 1851.

6 JOHN BURCH (1826-18??), born at Wye on 15 August 1826. He was a farmer, and living at home in 1851. In 1861 he was at Deal. He and Elizabeth had issue:

7 JAMES BURCH (1828-19??), born on 22 October 1828. He married Emma Adela Coney at Dover in the third quarter of 1854. Emma had been born in Lambeth. In 1881 he was clerk to the gas and water company and lived at 23 Oaten Hill, in St Mary Bredin parish, Canterbury with his wife and seven children, all born in Canterbury. He and Emma were still living in Canterbury in 1901. Emma died at Canterbury in the second quarter of 1909.

7.1 ADELA E BURCH (1855?-19??), aged 25 in 1881, when she was superintendant registrar. She was living at home in 1901.

7.2 FLORENCE ELLEN BURCH (1857-19??), born in Canterbury in the third querter of 1857, and aged 23 in 1881. She was living at home in 1901.

7.3 JAMES ERNEST BURCH (1859-19??), born in Canterbury in the second quarter of 1859, and living at home in 1901. He was a solicitor.

7.4 BLANCHE ADA BURCH (1861-??), born in the third quarter of 1861, and aged 19 in 1881.

7.5 BERTHA A BURCH (1863?-??), aged 17 in 1881. She is probably the Bertha Augusta Burch who married at Canterbury in the second quarter of 1895.

7.6 GERTRUDE A BURCH (1865?-19??), aged 15 in 1881. She was living at home in 1901.

7.7 HENRY E BURCH (1866-??), born in Canterbury in the third quarter of 1866, aged 14 in 1881.

7.8 ARTHUR RODNEY BURCH (1871-??), born in the final quarter of 1871 and aged 9 in 1881. In 1901, he was at Hillingdon, Middlesex. and working as a gas engineer.

WILLIAM BURCH (1818-1896?) was born on 19 February 1818 in Wye, Kent. He married Sarah Goodchild at Canterbury in the first quarter of 1843.

She was the same age as he was, and had been born in Canterbury.

In 1851, he was at Oversland Farm, Boughton under Blean, near Faversham, farming 45 acres, and employing three labourers and two boys (one of whom lived in).

In 1861 and 1862 he was at another farm at Boughton, to which he had moved around 1855. He farmed 100 acres, and employed nine men and two boys. In 1871 the family was at the 374-acre Rhode Court Farm, Selling, where William employed 31 men and ten boys.

It seems that Sarah died, probably in the third quarter of 1871. A year later, William remarried, to Mary Ann Willson, who was a year older than him. His new wife had been born in Canterbury.

In 1881, he and Mary had retired, and they were living with their daughter at Melbourne House, 11 West Cliffe, Whitstable. In 1891, the house was called Moss Leigh. Kate had moved out, and Arthur was staying with them on Census Night. William died before 1898, probably in the Blean registration district at the end of 1896. Mary Ann probably died in the second quarter of 1898.

William and Sarah Burch had five children:

1 JOHN THOMAS BURCH (1848-1923), born in Canterbury on 11 May 1848. He was living at home in 1861. He remained in Boughton and was unemployed at the time of the 1881 census. He married Agnes Essex, from Leigh in Worcestershire, in the second quarter of 1871. She had been born at the end of 1844. In 1901, the family was at Hernhill. John was a farm steward there. In 1911 they were at Brinley Farm, Boughton, where John was farm manager. John died in the second quarter of 1923. They had seven children:

1.1 AGNES FLORENCE BURCH (1873-19??), born in Hernhill in the first quarter of 1873. She married in Faversham in the first quarter of 1909.

1.2 MARGARET GERTRUDE BURCH (1874-??), born in Hernhill in the third quarter of 1874.

1.3 WILLIAM ESSEX BURCH (1876-??), born in Hernhill in the third quarter of 1876. In 1911 he was an ironmonger's clerk, and living with his parents.

1.4 JOHN FREDERICK BURCH (1878-1904), born in Hernhill and aged 2 in 1881. He was aged 22 in 1901, assisting his father on the farm. He died, aged 25, in the Faversham registration district, in the first quarter of 1904.

1.5 ERNEST JAMES BURCH (1880-19??), born in Hernhill and aged 5 months in 1881. In 1901, he was an ironmonger's clerk in Hernhill. He married Kate Outridge in 1915. They had a son:

1.7 HILDA MARY BURCH (1886-1890), born in the Faversham registration district in the second quarter of 1886. She died around her fourth birthday.

2 ARTHUR BURCH (1850-1913?), born in Canterbury in April 1850. He married Mary Elizabeth Dobell at Canterbury at the end of 1872. She had been born in Gloucester at the beginning of 1848. Shortly after his marriage he moved to Hernhill, near Faversham. Here he farmed at Waterham, a 190-acre farm, employing eleven men and two boys. Some time between 1882 and 1885, he moved to Eardiston, in Worcestershire. In 1891 he was described as a butcher, and was visiting his father in Whitstable. He was widowed in the third quarter of 1896. In 1901, he was a farm manager, living at Dean Park, Burford St Mary, near Ludlow in Shropshire. In 1911 he described himself as a market gardener, and was 11 Blastefield Road, Worcester. He probably died in Worcester in the second quarter of 1913. He had eleven children, two of whom died before 1911.

2.1 EDWARD WILLIAM BURCH (1873-??), born in Selling in the third quarter of 1873.

2.2 ARTHUR BURCH (1874-19??), born in Boughton in the third quarter of 1874, aged 26 in 1901, when he was a jeweller and goldsmith, working on his own account. He may have had a twin sister, Margaret Gertrude.

2.3 KATIE ELIZA BURCH (1876-19??), born in Hernhill in the first quarter of 1876, aged 25 in 1901. She kept house for her father after her mother's death.

2.4 HELEN AGNES BURCH (1877-19??), born in Hernhill in the second quarter of 1877, aged 33 in 1911. She was a dressmaker, working on her own account. In 1911 she was looking after her father.

2.5 FREDERICK MAHON BURCH (1880-??), born in Hernhill in the second quarter of 1880.

2.6 PERCY JOHN BURCH (1881-1960), born in Hernhill on 2 November 1881. In 1901 he was a farm bailiff. Around 1905 he emigrated to British Columbia and took up employment as a butcher. He married Mabel Blanche Craig on 20 September 1911 in Vancouver. She was some six years younger than him. Percy died on 4 January 1960 in Haney (now incorporated within the City of Maple Ridge) British Columbia. Blanche survived him, dying in Vancouver on 4 September 1973.

Percy and Blanche had at least one son:

2.7 ADA FLORENCE BURCH (1885-19??), born in Eardiston in the second quarter of 1885, aged 16 in 1901, when she was employed as a draper.

2.8 GERTRUDE ESTER BURCH (1887-1963), born in Eardiston in the second quarter of 1887, and aged 14 in 1901. She emigrated to British Columbia, finding employment as a nurse (more possibly as a nanny) with an affluent English family living in Vancouver, with a summer residence in Sechelt. Sechelt and the Sunshine Coast (including the hamlet of Roberts Creek) was known as the 'Riviera of Canada' and had numerous luxurious summer homes.

Gertrude met and married John (Jack) Reeves who was developing a pioneer farm in the Roberts Creek area. They were married in Vancouver on 10 June 1914. Gertrude was 27, Jack was 35.

John (Jack) Reeves (6 October 1876 - 6 April 1962) was born in Rowhams Hampshire. His parents are listed as George Reeves, a farmer of Wiltshire, and Ann Brazier of Hampshire. Jack Reeves immigrated to Canada in 1906, taking up a homestead in the vicinity of Roberts Creek, BC.

Gertrude and Jack went on to develop a successful market garden operation supplying quality fruits and vegetables to the institutions and residents of the Sunshine Coast. Gertrude taught herself to both weave and make pottery and became accomplished at both, winning many awards in both local and provincial exhibitions. Gertrude also made and marketed, under her own label, blackcurrant jam in 4-pound tins.

Gertrude and Jack had four children:

2.8.1 JOHN DOBEL REEVES (1915-1995) John was born at home at Roberts Creek, BC on 21 April 1915 and died in Victoria BC on 28 December 1995. John married Ursula Noël (Judy) White of Roberts Creek. For the first half of his life John was a logger (woodsman). Later in life he took up employment with the Government of British Columbia as a Security Officer in the Lt. Governor's residence. Ursula Noël (Judy) White (24 December 1913 - 11 August 1957, born in Ottawa Ontario). Judy's parents were Clare Agustus White (20 November 1886 - 22 January 1968, born in London England) and Daisy Clare BENNISON (2 June 1885 - 2 August 1966, of Southsea, England. Judy's younger sister, Vivian Margaret White, married John's younger brother Gordon REEVES. Judy died of breast cancer. After the death of his first wife, Ursula Noël, John remarried the widow Sophia (Bany) Fatt. John outlived Sophia, who died in 1985. John again remarried a widow, Merla May -?- who outlived him. John and 'Judy' had three children:

2.8.1.1 LAWRENCE CRAIG REEVES (1939-?), was born in Vancouver BC on 10 December 1939. He was born with severe Down's syndrome and was institutionalized around 1954. His fate is unknown for government records are kept confidential. Also, it is believed that his name was changed.

2.8.1.2 KEITH DOUGLAS REEVES (1941-1992), born in Vancouver BC on 26 November 1941. Keith was a career bank manager. He died of bone cancer on 16 August 1992.

2.8.1.3 ALASTAIR IAN REEVES (b.1948), born in Victoria B.C on 31 August 1948. Now retired, Alastair was a provincial government forestry officer.

2.8.2 GORDON REEVES (1916-2012), born in Vancouver BC on 13 December 1916. He married Vivian Margaret White (sister of Ursula Noël White)

Albin Frederick Emanuel Danroth, (1904 - ?) was born in Clan William, Manitoba. His parents were Eli Danroth and Annie Johnson both of Sweden. Sheila and Frederick Danroth had six children: (order of birth is uncertain at present)

2.8.4.1 SANDRA PORTEOUS She married Jan Berjink, an airline pilot with Air Canada (now retired). Both living.

2.8.4.2 GLENDA PORTEOUS She became Mrs Vernon

2.8.4.3 GREGORY PORTEOUS He became a safety superintendent. His wife is called Analise.

2.8.4.4 GARTH PORTEOUS He became a master mariner with British Columbia Ferries Corporation.

2.9 MAY OLIVE BURCH (1887-1964), Gertrude's twin sister (18 March 1887- 16 September 1964). May emigrated to British Columbia and worked 'in service' in Cliff Cove (the area now known as Horseshoe Bay, North Vancouver) where she met and married Frederick Paul Paquette. They were married on 8 October 1913. They moved to the hamlet of Roberts Creek, British Columbia, for work in the lumbering industry and to be closer to May's twin sister Gertrude (Reeves). May spent the greater part of her life in Roberts Creek where she was a housewife. Frederick Paul Paquette was born in Marquette, Michigan, USA, on 28 October 1874 and died in Pender Harbour, British Columbia on 14 March 1953. Frederick Paquette was a logger (woodsman) for his entire life. His parents are listed as: Joseph Paquette and Celina Rielt, both of France. May and Frederick Paquette had three children:

3 SARAH ANN BURCH (1854-18??), born at Boughton under Blean in the fourth quarter of 1854. She was aged 6 in 1861. She married Edward Wiltshier (sic) in Faversham in the third quarter of 1877. They emigrated to Natal in South Africa. Later, Sarah was widowed and returned to England, where she kept a lodging house at 2 Bath Place, Worthing. Sarah and Edward had two children:

3.1 REGINALD M WILTSHIRE (1880?-??), born in Natal and aged 10 in 1891.

3.2 KATE M WILTSHIRE (1882?-??), born in Natal and aged 8 in 1891.

4 FREDERICK WILLIAM BURCH (1857-18??), registered as William Frederick, born at Boughton under Blean in the fourth quarter of 1857 and aged 3 in 1861.

5 KATE ELIZA BURCH (1862-1938), born at Boughton under Blean, Kent on 4 March 1862. She was living with her father and stepmother in Whitstable in 1881. In 1891, she was staying with her sister, Sarah Wiltshire at 2 Bath Place, Worthing. In 1898, after her father's death, she was at The Firs, Victoria Road, Charlton.

On 3 August 1898, she married a widower, Thomas Edward Pettman, at Thanet Register Office. (Thomas' sister, Fanny Musgrove, had also been living in Charlton.) He was 57, she was 36. The couple lived in Ramsgate, and had two children, to accompany Thomas' daughter from his previous marriage.

Kate was widowed in 1910, but lived on at Goodwin Lodge, 45 Thanet Road, Ramsgate.

Kate moved to 3 Elms Park Terrace, Marlborough Road, Ramsgate, where she supplemented her income after Thomas' death by taking in summer boarders. (The house had eleven rooms.) On Census Day 1911, she had her sons and her three sisters-in-law, Harriet Lang, Elizabeth Pettman and Anna Goodchild staying with her. She moved to London during the War. In 1921, she was at 27 Alconbury Road, Hackney with her sons Frederick and Ernest, and a 74-year-old visitor, Fanny Wilkinson, a dressmaker from Crediton in Devon.

She died on 2 March 1938, aged 76.
