The Crombies of Fetternear

The Cromby family lived in Fetternear and Balquhain in Aberdeenshire at the end of the 18th century. The branch which was to become famous for its involvement in Cothal Mills can be traced back to a James Cromby, who was proably born around 1750.

JAMES CROMBY (17??-18??) was probably born around 1750. He married Margaret Copland in 1772. She was already pregnant, as James was arraigned before the Chapel of Garioch Kirk Session on 20 September 1772. It is recorded:

Session met and constitute, before Sermon James Cromby in Fetternear appeared and confessed himself guilty of antenuptial fornication with Margaret Copland and begged to be absolved from the scandal, and he appearing this day before the Congregation was rebuked and dismissed, having paid four shillings of penalty.

(Margaret only professed her repentance on 2 May 1773.)

His son's death certificate described James as a manufacturer - he might well have been a handloom weaver.

James and Margaret had issue:

1 JOHN CROMBIE (1772-1858), baptized on 27 September 1772 at Chapel of Garioch. He went to work for the Kilgours of Buchan. By 1800, when the firm moved to Auchlee for the sake of more water power, he had an important place in the counting house. In 1802 or thereabouts he moved to Cothal, and in 1805 formed a partnership with James Knowles, Alexander Rhind and Alexander Simpson, called initially Crombie, Knowles and Company. This was the precursor of Crombie Mills.

On 8 January 1809, when he was 37, he married Catherine Harvey. They set up house at the Old Manse in Fintray.

Catherine was some fourteen years younger than John. She was one of seven daughters and four sons of William Harvey, a prosperous farmer of Monykebock in New Machar.

The partnership was wound up in 1828, a period of depression for the cloth trade, but the business was kept going by John's son, James, who injected new life into it.

John died at the Old Manse on 6 May 1858. His widow survived him, dying on 30 July 1864. They had issue:

On 30 March 1837, he married Katherin Scott Forbes, the daughter and eldest child of Theodore Forbes, the East India Company's Commercial and Political Resident in Yemen and his Armenian wife, Eliza Kevork, or Kewark.
