George McBain Farquharson (1826-1898) and his ancestors

A stone set into Strathdon church wall reads:

Here lie the remains of Robert Farquharson of Allerg, died 31 January 1771 in the 77th year of his age. And of Isabel Anderson, his spouse, who died 18 February 18?? in the 70th year of her age. Their grandchildren John, James, Margaret and Jean. (Some verse follows.) Robt Farquharson, their son, died 16 April 1793 aged 73. Jean Grant, his spouse died 3 July 1800 aged ?? Isobel, their daughter died 2 April 1791 aged 40 years. Memento Mori.

ROBERT FARQUHARSON (1748-1826), seventh laird of Allargue, was born in 1748. He was educated at King's College, Aberdeen from whence he graduated in 1767. He entered the ministry and was ordained by the Alford Presbytery on 29 April 1772. Initially he was minister at Kirkmichael, Tomintoul but later took the post of minister at Logie Coldstone, a post he held until his death. Robert married Elizabeth Innes, daughter of Rev. James Innes, minister of Marnoch on 14 December 1779. They had 15 children in the space of the next 21 years.

He died on 5 January 1826. His eldest son, Robert, succeeded to Allargue.

Robert and Elizabeth's issue included:

1 ROBERT FARQUHARSON (1780-178?), baptized on 9 April 1780 at Logie-Coldstone. Presumably he died in infancy.

3 ROBERT FARQUHARSON (1783-1863), born on 13 January 1783 and baptized on the 25th at Logie-Coldstone. He married Jean Nairn on 7 December 1811 at Paisley. (It seems the family were established in business in Renfrewshire.) He became the eighth laird of Allargue in 1826 after his father's death, and also laird of Breda. Two memorial inscriptions on the south wall inside Strathdon church read:

And of their son, Robert Farquharson, younger of Allargue, born 22nd July 1828, died 9th November 1858. 15 GEORGE FARQUHARSON (1800-1826), see below.

Possibly: JANE FARQUHARSON (1799-18??), who married John Young at Hobart on 7 August 1823. She was 24, he was 27.

GEORGE FARQUHARSON (1800-1826) was baptized on 4 September 1800 at Logie-Coldstone. On 2 November 1822, his father petitioned for a grant of land in Van Diemen's Land (i.e. Tasmania), and in 1823 he emigrated, arriving on the Berwick from Gravesend on 21 June. (The grant was in the district of Bothwell, and he named the block Allargue.) On 15 October 1823, aged 23 years, he married Mary Oliphant McBain, the daughter of Alexander McBain, Esq, of Demerara, aged 21 years, at St David's Church, Hobart Town.

Mary was born in Glasgow on 18 March 1803, the eldest daughter of Alexander McBain and his spouse Elizabeth Turnbull. Her uncle was Thomas Anstey, J.P., of Jericho, Tasmania. (Elizabeth McBain and Mary Anstey were sisters.) The Ansteys were related to the Oliphants. Both the Ansteys and the Oliphants were significant families in Tasmania, and Thomas Anstey (later of Anstey Barton, Oatlands, Tasmania) had sailed into Hobart on the Berwick too. It is very likely that Mary was also on this ship (the passenger list is incomplete), and that she was already pregnant with George's child. This could possibly explain why it was George's father, rather than George himself, who petitioned Lord Bathurst for the land grant.

At the beginning of 1826, he was accused of sheep-stealing, and after a five day trial, lasting from 28 May to 2 June, was condemned to death. The execution took place on 18 September 1826.

Friends subsequently helped Mary to recover George's land, but she remained in Tasmania for only another year, and set sail back to England on the Persian, leaving Hobart on 3 January 1828, accompanied by the two children. Dr John Barnes travelled on the same ship, and Mary later married him. Mary had three further children.

George and Mary Farquharson had issue:

1 JANE FARQUHARSON (1823-1824). Their first child was probably Jane Farquharson, who died, aged one, at Hobart on 22 March 1824.

2 GEORGE McBAIN BARNES FARQUHARSON (1824-1898), born on 9 September 1824, see below.

3 ELIZA FARQUHARSON (1826-1908), born on 6 May 1826 during George's imprisonment. She married Frederick Fenton and emigrated to Melbourne, where she had at least three children. She died in Kensington on 20 February 1908, and is buried in the family vault of Baron da Costa Ricci at Kensal Green.

GEORGE McBAIN BARNES FARQUHARSON (1824-1898) was born at Hobart on 9 September 1824. He returned to England with his mother early in 1828, and was brought up by her together with his sister and three half-siblings. At times he used his stepfather's surname, Barnes, but he was proud of his Farquharson descent, and in his will stipulated that his two illegitimate daughters, Florence and Annie Carvell, should take the Farquharson surname.

He entered the Indian Army, maybe through the influence of his uncle Francis. It is not certain whether he lied about his age - some records suggest that his year of birth was recorded as 1818. He obtained his first commission on 30 January 1842. Promoted to Captain during the Anglo-Persian War, on 5 July 1857, he served as an officer of the 20th Regiment, Native Infantry. By 1869, he was second-in-command, and was also since 30 January 1868 a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Bombay Presidency Staff Corps, with the rank of Major-General. (He may have held this rank since 25 January 1861.)

He succeeded to the estate of Breda on the death of his uncle, Francis, in 1872. He retired from the Indian Army on 23 January 1875. He was at Breda House, Alford in 1879 and 1881. Anne Marie Carvell was one of his servants at Breda, and accompanied him to London. She was from Everdon, near Daventry, Northamptonshire, christened on 25 May 1856, the daughter of Calib Carvell and Elizabeth (née Bishop). She had two daughters by George. Florence Minnie F Carvell was born at Everdon at the end of 1879. In 1881, she was living with her cousin, Lydia Carvell, at Everdon. (Lydia also had two illegitimate children.) Annie Eliza F Carvell was born in Marylebone in the first quarter of 1883.

George sold Breda in 1892, shortly before his death. In 1891 he was at 1 Eastfield Rise, Hoe Street North, Walthamstow. He died in Walthamstow on 12 November 1898.

The Carvells duly changed their name to Farquharson. In 1911, they were at 136 Orford Road, Walthamstow. Florence married Harold Heath in the spring of 1911. A daughter, Margaret A Heath was born in the third quarter of 1914. Anne Marie probably died in Bromley in the first quarter of 1930, aged 73.
