Jane Portsmouth (1806?-1848)

JOHN PORTSMOUTH (173?-?) married Hester Taylor on 19 Apr 1761 at Sunninghill, Berkshire. Their issue included:

1 JOHN PORTSMOUTH (1761-?), baptized on 22 August 1761 at Sunninghill.

2 THOMAS PORTSMOUTH (1763-?), baptized on 8 May 1763 at Sunninghill.

3 MARY PORTSMOUTH (1765-?), baptized on 9 September 1765 at Sunninghill.

4 ELIZABETH PORTSMOUTH (1769-?), baptized on 30 March 1769 at Sunninghill.

5 GEORGE PORTSMOUTH (1774-18??), baptized on 9 October 1774 at Sunninghill, of whom more below.

6 SUSANNAH PORTSMOUTH (1782-?), baptized on 24 May 1782 at Sunninghill.

GEORGE PORTSMOUTH (1774-18??) was christened on 9 Oct 1774 at Sunninghill, Berkshire. He married Sarah Hudson on 6 Jan 1796 at Sunninghill, Berkshire.

Sarah Hudson was christened on 9 Dec 1770 at Uffington, Berkshire. Her father was John Hudson and her mother's name was Mary.

Sarah was probably widowed and living at Whitley Street, Reading in 1841. She died in the third quarter of 1847, and according to the death duty registers, her executor was Mary Hill, also of Reading.

Their issue included:

1 WILLIAM PORTSMOUTH (1796-?), baptized on 24 July 1796 at Sunninghill.

2 GEORGE PORTSMOUTH (1799-?), baptized on 11 August 1799 at Sunninghill. He was possibly at Wokingham in 1851 with his wife, Eliza (aged 40, from Portsmouth) and nine-year-old son John.

3 SUSANNAH PORTSMOUTH (1802-1833), baptized on 28 March 1802 at Sunninghill. She married John Larbey on 5 November 1832 at Godalming, Surrey. Susannah was pregnant with their daughter. He was six years younger than her, the son of William Larbey and Mary, née Wisdom, baptized in Godalming on 6 March 1808. The witnesses were Ann Birdow, probably John's sister, and Ann and John Hampton.

The couple lived at Farncombe, Surrey. The marriage was a short one, for Susannah died shortly after the birth of a baby daughter. She was buried at Godalming on 10 February 1833. (Her age is given as 27 - had she concealed her age from her husband?)

John lived on in Godalming. He was in Mead Row at the time of his daughter's christening, John remarried in the first quarter of 1839, to Lucy Leggs, and in 1841 and 1851 they were at 31 Church St. He described himself in 1841 as a labourer, and in 1851 as a gravedigger. Susannah and John's daughter was:

3.1 SUSANNAH LARBEY (1833-1907), baptized on 10 March 1833 at Godalming, a month after her mother's funeral. She emigrated to Australia on 5 November 1851, leaving from Plymouth on the Joshua. The ship arrived in Port Phillip, Australia on 30 January 1852. The shipping documents show Susannah's calling as Domestic Servant, her Native County as Surrey and parents John and Susan, her religion as C of E and that she was single, aged 19 and could read and write.

She had children by Edward Andrew and James Marshall, although there is no evidence that she ever married either of them. In 1902, however, she married Edward McKivat, who had been born in Ireland. She died at East Orange, New South Wales, on 28 September 1907. From her is descended Douglas JOHNSON of Kensington, Victoria, one of the researchers of these notes. (Follow this link to further information based on Doug's notes.)

4 ELIZABETH PORTSMOUTH (1806-?), baptized on 28 December 1806 at Sunninghill.

5 JANE PORTSMOUTH (1809?-1848), baptized on 30 April 1809 at Sunninghill, Berks. She married Philip Knight at St Mark's Church, Kennington on 28 July 1829. She died of bronchitis at 25 Priory Road, Wandsworth on 27 January 1848. Her age at death was given as 41.

6 JOHN PORTCHMOUTH (1812-1880), baptized on 2 February 1812 at Sunninghill. In 1851, he was a messenger, living with his wife, Mary, at 2 Parliament Street, Westminster. Mary was from Lincoln.

By 1871 he was a porter, living at the lodge at Richmond Terrace, still in Westminster. John died at the age of 69 in the third quarter of 1880 in the district of St George's, Hanover Square. Mary moved to Lambeth, and in 1881 was at a lodging house at 2 Lansdown Gardens with her son. Mary died at Lambeth in the first quarter of 1895, aged 83. John and Mary had three children:

6.1 WILLIAM PORTCHMOUTH (1847-??), born in Westminster in the last quarter of 1847.

6.2 MARY PORTCHMOUTH (1850-1852), born in Lambeth in the second quarter of 1850. She died in the third quarter of 1852.

6.3 JOHN PORTCHMOUTH (1852-1922), born in Westminster in the first quarter of 1852. He became an insurance clerk, and remained single, looking after his mother until her death. In 1911 he was in a one-room apartment at 78 Camberwell New Road, Lambeth. He died in Lambeth at the start of 1922.
