The Prossers of Fintray

Family legend has it that the Prossers came to Fintray in Aberdeenshire from Wales. The first Prosser to come to Aberdeenshire was Robert Prosser, and he is said to have been coachman to Lady Forbes, "who had estates in Wales." This may have been Sarah Sempill, who united the Sempill and the Forbes families in 1780.

ROBERT PROSSER (1770?-1846) was born in Monmouth in 1769 or 1770, or possibly later. (A Robert Prosser was baptized at Monmouth on 24 April 1774, the son of John and Margaret Prosser.) His death notice suggests that he moved to Fintray some time in the 1790s.

He married Helen Jeffery on 12 July 1802 at Fintray. At the time, he was 'in Fintray'. In 1804, he was at Hatton of Fintray.

He was very likely concerned in the running of the Fintray Estate. An advertisement in the Aberdeen Press and Journal of 20 February 1822 invited tenders for the leases of ten farms there, including "Part of Hatton", held by Robert himself, comprising a little over eight acres of arable land and an acre of pasture. The offers were to be received at Robert Prosser's in Hatton, on Saturday the 9th day of March next at 10 o'clock A.M., when all those desirous of becoming tenants will attend.

In August 1824, he was depute-master of the Sir Arthur Forbes' Lodge of Gardeners. A press notice describes how after their general meeting at Hatton of Fintray, the brethren walked in procession through the village, fancifully decorated with flowers, and concluded the evening with a Ball, which was kept up with all that spirit and harmony so peculiar to the brethren of the True Blue.

At some time before 1833 Helen died, and Robert married again, on 7 December 1833. He was 62, and his young bride, Susan Tosh, only 27. (In 1841, his age is given as 68.)

Robert died on 8 September 1846. At this time he was an innkeeper at Hatton of Fintray. He also farmed the Inn Farm. A notice in the Aberdeen Journal of 30 September 1846 reads: On the 8th inst., at the Hatton of Fintray, Mr Robert Prosser, aged 76. He was a native of Monmouth, but had resided for the last fifty years in the above parish. He has died truly respected by all who knew him.

Susan lived on and remarried, to John Walker, some eight years younger than her, who took over the inn and farm. They had a daughter, Ann Walker, but shortly after this, Susan died on 14 August 1851 at the age of 45. (John married again. His wife, Jane, was 17 years younger than him, and they had at least five further children, whom John and she brought up with Susan and Robert's children.)

Robert and Susan's grave is in Fintray kirkyard, immediately behind the grave of William Davie and his wife Helen Prosser. The inscription reads:
Erected by Susan Tosh in memory of her husband Robert Prosser who died 8th Septr 1846 aged 75 years, also in memory of her son Robert who died 16th Janry 1846 aged 10 years, also the above Susan Tosh, who died 14th August 1851 aged 45 years and Isabella Prosser, who died 23rd September 1852 aged 17 years, also their daughter Susan who died 10th Oct 1879 aged 36 years.

Robert and Helen Prosser had eight children:

1 HUGH PROSSER (1802-18??), born at Fintray on 20 September 1802 and baptized on 3 October. He presumably died in infancy.

2 JOHN PROSSER (1804-1883), of whom more below.
